After the big day yesterday, the girls got a lot of sleep and made it just in time for the 10AM hotel breakfast. There was even time to drop off laundry and the front desk (yay for clean clothes).
To kill some time before the sticky waterfalls afternoon excursion Alex and Chrissy got dressed and walked 20 minutes across the old town square to find the insta worthy Versailles de flore. This is a hotel that could be in Vegas. The courtyard was decorated as though you were walking through the gardens at Versailles and the cafe chairs and tables were gold. It definitely felt like walking through a fairytale land.
The cafe de Versailles offered unique and refreshing coffee and tea drinks. Chrissy was feeling adventurous and got a cold espresso with mint beverage while Alex ordered a basic earl grey iced tea. The baristas kept asking if inside seating was preferred because Alex and Chrissy kept chugging water and dabbing faces from the heat. However they prevailed outside. #difts (do it for the story)
Following a successful photo shoot, Alex and Chrissy hailed a tuk-tuk back to the hotel. They considered bartering but were ultimately not feeling fiesty so quickly agreed to the driver’s 100baht offer. They had also been in Thailand for 5 days and this was their first time on tuk-tuk! The ride did not disappoint. Hair was flying all over with the breeze as the tuk-tuk weaved through the city and side roads. Kudos to the tuk tuk driver for taking our pic after the ride!
The gals then changed from Versailles attire to outdoor adventure clothes for the sticky waterfalls. The drive to the sticky waterfalls was about 1hr 10mins outside the city in an air conditioned Sudan. Finally, Chrissy could take her nap with AirPods on the car ride over.
The Bua Tong Waterfalls were located inside the Chet Si Fountain National Park. Here, you park at the top of the waterfalls and walk down to the bottom. There were 4 falls all together and the first one was the most dangerous so they started at 4th and worked the way up to the second. The guide, Kiki, had grown up in the area and described how the falls had changed over time. Before, there used to be a fountain at the top. the Thai think that too many people threw coins in so the fountain went away. Some areas also used to be deep enough to jump off into the pools but those areas are only knee deep now. The falls are continuing to spread over wider territory. You could tell the slippery parts from the sturdy parts by the color of the rock. Dark grey = slippery. Tan or green = not slippery. The deposits of limestone make the waterfalls feel like you are walking on soft sandpaper and give the falls their “sticky” name.
Alex and Chrissy felt like school kids when the guide left them to “play” while he went off to make lunch. The girls had a great time climbing and exploring. When the rocks were too slippery, they had to walk through the an inch or so of mud that was very gooey. In their exploring, outside the waterfall, they came across a beautiful walkway through jungle.
This waterfall was the most unique waterfall Alex and Chrissy have ever been too. When they were done playing, they dried off and followed their guide to a homemade lunch of pad kra pao, sautéed basil, peppers, onions, and chicken in soy sauce over rice. They were warned that if they ordered this in Phuket; they should specify “not spicy” as chilis are traditionally incorporated into the dish. Chrissy tried the “sponsor” drink that tasted like melted lemon hard candies.
Before driving home, the guide had Alex and Chrissy taste a tacob berry off of the tree. These berries are native to the area and are not sold in stores but tasted like cotton candy grapes! Could be a potential business idea to grow these and use them in something. You eat them by squeezing the seeds and juice out of the berry and don’t eat the outside.
Upon arriving back at the hotel, the gals showered and got ready to head to Mars. Mars is a cafe on the west side of the square that is known for its photo op spot that looks like you are, you guessed it, on Mars! The funny thing was, Mars is generally lit up by the sun through a skylight and Alex and Chrissy went when it was dark out. But so not fear, Alex figured out a way to make Chrissy’s dream photo shoot work. It almost turned out better because there were not many patrons so they could take as long as they needed. Mars also had some fun cocktails and dry ice around the bar that made it seem like you were not in Thailand. On their way out, they found a great pair of glasses to end the experience.
To get back towards the hotel, Chrissy hailed a tuk-tuk. Craving some wine, they ended up getting food at the Chiang Mai Saloon. Chrissy has delicious pad see ew and Alex had the worst Pad Thai she had ever tasted and decided to get other food across the street.
After another memorable day, the girls packed their bags to get ready for their flight tomorrow to Phuket.
